Plastic Occlusion and Staphylococcus aureus

by Andrew Bernett on Apr 22, 2026
Plastic Occlusion and Staphylococcus aureus

Most people think of gloves as a simple layer of protection—something you put on to keep your hands safe while cleaning, handling chemicals, or working in healthcare. But what’s often overlooked is that wearing plastic or nitrile gloves for extended periods can actually create the perfect environment for harmful bacteria to grow, especially if your skin is already compromised. Research published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica showed that non-breathable glove use significantly increases Staphylococcus aureus on the skin, with more than half of individuals with damaged skin already colonized. The reason is straightforward: plastic gloves trap heat and moisture, creating a warm, sealed environment where bacteria thrive. If your skin barrier is already weakened—through dryness, irritation, or micro-cracks—this effect becomes even more pronounced. Moisture gets locked in, heat builds, and the skin softens, making it more vulnerable to breakdown. Over time, this kind of occlusion can actually impair the skin barrier further, leading to increased water loss once the gloves are removed and leaving the skin worse off than before.

The problem isn’t occlusion itself—occlusion is a well-established tool in dermatology—but rather how it’s applied. Traditional plastic gloves create non-breathable occlusion, which traps sweat, weakens the skin, and encourages bacterial overgrowth. A better approach is controlled, breathable occlusion that supports the skin without suffocating it. This is where Bee Well Therapeutics takes a different path. By using a beeswax-infused textile system, Bee Well creates a microenvironment that retains hydration while still allowing moisture vapor to escape, preventing the excessive heat and dampness that lead to skin breakdown. This approach helps keep topical treatments in place longer, improves their effectiveness, and supports the skin’s natural repair process rather than working against it. Beeswax itself plays a key role, forming a protective yet breathable barrier with natural antibacterial properties that help reduce inflammation and maintain skin integrity. The result is a balanced environment—one that protects without creating the conditions that bacteria need to thrive.

At the end of the day, gloves still have their place, but wearing plastic gloves for long periods—especially on already damaged skin—can do more harm than good. They trap heat and moisture, increase bacterial growth, and weaken the very barrier they’re meant to protect. The goal shouldn’t just be protection—it should be healing and barrier support. By shifting from non-breathable occlusion to a controlled, breathable system, it’s possible to protect the skin while actually helping it recover. Because real protection doesn’t come from sealing the skin off—it comes from creating the right environment for it to function and heal properly.
